Castella Cake (カステラ Kasutera) By Shihomi

I want to thank , once again, my dear friend Shihomi for sharing with me this traditional Japanese Cake called Castella Cake.
The Castella Cake (Kasutera) is a sponge cake made with sugar, flour, eggs, and starch syrup.
The cake was brought to Japan by Portuguese merchants in the 16th century. The name is derived from Portuguese Pão de Castela, meaning “bread from Castile”.
There are many varieties of Castella Cake made with ingredients such as powdered green tea, brown sugar and honey.
Simple, natural, delicious 😉

  1. Mmmm looks really good. I’ll be in Japan next month and plan to go to Nagasaki, the birthplace of castella. I am going to pig out on castella the whole time I’m there!
